This video put me in the Christmas spirit. It almost makes me want to put on an ugly sweater and dance at the mall.

Updates
Just a couple quick updates from the past few weeks.
- We bought a new van and it should be delivered to us sometime in December. It is a 2012 Odyssey and is exactly what Thresa wanted. Sometime this month, you will see us pull up in a new van.
- I am finally bowling like I should. I have two 700 series's in a row with the last one being a 791. My back is feeling better and I have bowled pain free both weeks. Lets hope this trend continues and I can get my game back where it use to be.
- I am finishing up a 5 day work week. With the Thanksgiving holiday and our trip to Florida, I have not worked a 5 day week in about a month. Time for a nap I think.
- I have found Pandora radio and set up a couple stations to shuffle. I think I will like this while I work at home.

Nothing new - Thank God
It has been over a month since my last post "la familia". While a lot has happened, not much has changed. I am still so proud of my family. Every one of them. Thresa and I have bought some new things (a van, Kindle Fire, etc) but the things are not what is truly important. We also attended Sharon and Bobby's wedding and then celebrated our 27th anniversary. Both of these are wonderful events that should be treasured.
But the highlight of the past month is the times when our families get together. We had the whole family over last night to celebrate out anniversary and to get family pictures taken. That evening means far more than any "thing" could ever mean to us. So, basically, my thoughts for this update are still 'la familia'.
Happy Thanksgiving. It was for my family and I.

la familia
We are within a week of Sara and Kel's wedding and I cannot help but think of the great family that I have been blessed with. Our immediate family has ALWAYS been a huge source of pride. Our four daughters are all doing so well and have grown to be great adults, some with families of their own now. From our all girl troop, we have added two son-in-laws (as of this Saturday) and a granddaughter. And lets not forget Roland who is always excited to see anyone. Not a day goes by where I can stop thinking about how proud we are of each of you.
Our extended families are very much the same. In the past month, we have seen both my family and Thresa's family. Both are gifts from God. I enjoy every minute I get with each family.
Thanks all. I just wanted everyone to know that I think of family a lot during a typical work day. Also, I need to work on updating the pictures in my office in the basement.

TMI - but funny I hope
OK. I first want to say that this type of thing happens to everyone (I hope so). But what is different is whether the person gets as much enjoyment out of it as I have. Anyway, here is my story.
I agreed to help Lisa by staying with her when she had her sinus surgery at BroMenn. Little did I know that her appointment started at 6AM. So we go there a little early and I got her settled in for her surgery. About 7:30 I was able to get some more coffee and sit in the waiting room. A little later, Mother nature called (I hope I don't have to explain more). I found a bathroom and completed my visit. If "visits" were rated like hurricanes, it would probably be a category 4 (That was the start of the TMI). I went to my flush and watched the damn water rise instead of fall. I usually do a test flush before my "visit" to make sure this situation does not happen. So here I am with a toilet full of shit (I mean full) and no way to help it flow. No plunger or anything. So, I do what everyone else would do. I quickly washed my hands, turned off the lights and slithered away like nothing happened. Thankfully, Maury was not there doing DNA checks.
The funny part is that about an hour later, I saw a post-it note on that door saying "Out of Order". In fact, it was there all day. As a guy, I felt a little sense of pride. And I kept watching for people in Haz-Mat suits take care of my category 4 visit. The best news is that Lisa handled the surgery fine and seems to be making a good recovery. However, I have not gotten an update on the bathroom. I may have to stop by sometime to see if it is still out of order.
Please don't tell anyone about this or BroMenn may try to bill me for it.

Updates
I am not sure why I would post updates when most (OK, all) of the readers are my kids and they already know this stuff. Maybe the updates will show a theme (family maybe?). The summer has flown by fast. I seems that it was just starting but we have to take Julie back to college next week. One of the good things this summer is that our yard is still green. My neighbors think that I must have moved. Usually my yard is completely brown and weed filled by now.
This weekend we took a short family trip for my niece's wedding in Frankfort/Tinley Park. It was a great weekend to spend with Thresa's extended family. We always have such a good time with them. And it was a real joy to spend the weekend with all of our family. There is nothing I would have changed over the past weekend.
Now today is a different story. Kel fell down the stairs at their townhouse this morning. His manager called Sara because he was late and there was no answer on his phone. Sara found him lying on the floor at the bottom of the stairs. I think he had been there at least 90 minutes. After an ambulance ride, they spent most of the day at the hospital. Nothing is broken but lots of bruises, bumps and pains. So keep Kel in your prayers. Pray for Sara too as she transitions from College Student to "College Grad in the real world".
Finally, this week is my annual DR Test for work. Basically, we have 48 hours to rebuilt and restore my customer's entire computer environment in a different data center. This proves that if there were a Disaster, we could Recover their business within 48 hours. So I will be working most of this time (hint: I may be tired and cranky this week) and hope to get everything working before 9AM Wed. But it is rewarding to accomplish this type of task and I am really hoping to take Friday off to just spend time not working.Actually, I may put together some bookcases that Lisa bought at Ikea. That is better than working.

Fun weekend
We are up at the DeAngelis lake house in southwest Michian. It is beautiful here and so peaceful. Yesterday we drove up stopping at a shrine in Indiana (very nice) and a casino (odd combination). I even won at the casino. Then we got to the lake and relaxed. We hit a karaoke bar for the evening entertainment. Now I am relaxing by the lake with my coffee.
An upset on my back. I am having cortisone shots in my back Tuesday morning. It is like minor surgery in that I have a local and cannot drive home. Karen will pick me up rise me home. This should help me back and then I have physical therapy the next Tuesday. Oso I should feel better soon.

I'm back
It has been a few weeks since I posted on my blog. But I now have my new computer and I am able to blog again. So, there are lots if things to blog about but I think I will focus on something Julie wrote about. She joked about our family having group meetings at "Workaholics Anonymous". While that is a funny joke, we also need to keep everything in perspective.
Thresa and I just enjoyed a fabulous weekend in Chicago. We got to really enjoy the weekend with a Maroon 5 concert, Beauty and the Beast tickets, dinner with Rosie and John. We also did some shopping. But the best part was enjoying the weekend together.
My point is that our work ethic and our saving is what permitted us to have this weekend away. While Thresa and I work hard, and we passed that along to our kids, we always work with a purpose: saving for a future goal. The goal can be college, a trip, a purchase, just having some savings to handle the unexpected drowned computer or to save for retirement. So, keep working hard but always know this: Work to live don't live to work.

Happy Birthday IBM
One hundred years ago this week, a company named Computing Tabulating Recording was formed. Thirteen years later, that company changed its name to be International Business Machines. This week is IBM's 100th birthday. I have been fortunate to be an IBMer for 27 years so far and I hope for many more years.
I learned a few things about IBM during this celebration. I knew that IBM was critical in putting a man on the moon and on mapping the human genome. But I did not know that IBM invented Lazik surgery (why didn't I get a discount?). IBM also invented the UPC code that is scanned on every product now. These are just a couple of the changes that IBM has help make possible.
Anyway, I just wanted to wish IBM a happy birthday.

Pain in the Butt
As you know, I have been having occasional pain in my upper thigh and lower butt. Beyond messing up my bowling a little, it is causing me to walk with a gait (I think I am using that word correctly). I am walking with a small hunchback and not standing straight. Anyway, my leg is now getting numb when I walk any distance. And the pain in my a$$ is still there too.
I went to Dr. Vales last week. The current thinking is that I may have a herniated disk on my lower back (a slipped disk). But this will be determined during an MRI that I will have on Tuesday. I am also having some kind of nerve test on Wednesday. I don't know exactly what the nerve test is but it involved lots of needles (sounds like a fun time). Then I have another visit with Dr. Vales on Monday, June 20 to learn what happens next.
Right now, we don't know much. But at least I think there is a good plan to figure out what is happening. The research that I have done says that the MRI will show exactly what my lower back is doing and if any vertebrae have pushed into my spinal cord. And, hopefully, we will have better understanding of what treatments I may need on June 20th. I just figured it was time to let you know what was going on.

Ruby Slippers
OK. I worked all day yesterday (Sunday) so I figured I can spend a few minutes today on this update. I went to mass Saturday at Epiphany's 4PM mass. I knew I had to work Sunday morning so I made sure to attend on Saturday. Thresa was in Carrollton so I just solo'ed it at mass.
Anyway, I got the giggles at mass (not unusual) when I saw Msgr go to read the opening prayer from the book. The alter server was this tiny girl and the book was almost up to Msgr's waist. I giggled wondering how he could read the book from so far away. Then I noticed them. The tiny alter server was wearing these bright, sparkly ruby red shoes. Dorothy did not have slippers this bright. The whole scene got me laughing and put me in a great mood for the rest of the weekend. This young girl probably choose to wear her special shoes to church, especially since she was serving at church and serving our Lord. I can say that the shoes were appreciated by at least one person.
My thought during Mass (and always I hope) was/is, what are my special "ruby slippers" that I bring to the Lord?

Change/Busy
This may sound odd but it is a source of pride to see the amount of change in our family. Maybe it is age or just my odd nature but change is not a burden or something to dread. Thank God that the change in our family is due to growth and goals being obtained. All happy situations and that is where the pride comes from. This weekend we saw Sara graduation from College (first to two degrees) and we saw Anna baptized. This weekend we also saw Julie end her first year of college (except for those things call Exams). Finally, it was just as great to see Lisa more relaxed and able to really enjoy herself. I see this as being due to her promotion and new roommate.
So, while it was a very busy weekend, it was a weekend full of pride for me. Good job family. Keep up the great work and keep achieving those goals that you set.

Bowling Champs
Just wanted people to know that my bowling team just won our league this season. We ended up 1/2 point ahead of the second place team at the end of the season. So it was close and made for a fun ending to the season.
I guess that if I am going to be a bowling dork, I might as well be a Champion Bowling Dork. Now on to summer activities!!!!

Long time no talk
The problem with blogs is that they date your posts. So I can see first hand that I don't update things very often. Oops. Again, why does this guy even have a blog.
So, what has gone on the last couple weeks that is of importance to me? Just a few of the highlights and you will notice that most deal with family members. These are just random thoughts in no particular order.
Lisa started her new job. We are so proud of her. We spent a weekend with Julie in St. Louis. It was a great time and we really enjoyed seeing her. Then I got to drive her back Tuesday morning and I was able to work in St. Louis at my client's site. I am very glad to have a job that is so flexible. We have seen Sara and Kel a lot lately. That is nice. It seems for some reason that we see Sara around meal time usually. Wonder why. I am still on Cloud 9 about being a Grandpa. Karen and Jeremy are great parents and, of course, Anna is a great baby. We got to have Thresa's Mom, Rose, here for the weekend and we had some very good chats. Thresa and I started a new dance class. With Sara too. It is a dance that may work with most songs so it should be very helpful. And my bowling team is back in first place with only one week to go. Lets hope we can win next week.
It has been a great couple weeks. My random thought is that I watched the movie "The Patriot" today. What a great movie.
Have a good week everyone and remember: April is my birthday month!!!!!!!!!

How time flies
With the birth of Anna, I have had some time to reflect on how communication has changed in the past 25 years since Karen was born. I talked about this some after dinner but thought I would write about it. When Thresa and I had Karen, we were just as excited as Karen and Jeremy are. Proud. Happy beyond words. Maybe a little scared about the future. More than anything, we wanted to share our beautiful daughter with the rest of our family. We had visitors of friends and family. And we took lots of pictures. Part of preparing for a baby was to load up the camera so they we could take plenty of pictures. Not much of a difference yet. Realize that cellular phones and the Internet were not even dreams yet in 1985. PC's had just been invented.
If we wanted the pictures, we had to take the film to the store to be developed. We would get the pictures about a day or two later. Pictures that we wanted to send to people had to be mailed after we developed the film. Basically, it took a week or more for anyone to get a picture of our daughter.
Calling people was about as primitive. We had to use a real phone (cord and all). Calling from the hospital room required a long distance calling card (do any of you even know that they is?). There were no cell phones so I did most of the calling from home. People just knew to wait for any news.
Contrast this to last Thursday when Karen and Jeremy shared Anna with us. We took lots of pictures (digital of coursse) and Jeremy put some on facebook within a couple hours. Thresa and I took pictures using our iPhones and put them on facebook. Within less than 2 hours of Anna being brought home, we got a phone message from Boyer's congratulating us on being grandparents. They saw the news on facebook since Sue is a friend of mine. Cellular Calls and text messages were used to let people know about this great news within an hour or two. Julie and Joey even got to see their new niece using Skype even though they were miles away at college.
My point is that change only speeds up with each generation. The communication we used for Anna's birth in 2011 was not even dreamed of in 1985. Not even seen in any "future" movies. So, what advances will we see in the next 25 years? How primitive will out current cell phones, skype, facebook and digital cameras seem when Anna is 25?

The Devil's series
This week at bowling, I actually had a decent week. I did not seem to be scoring very well (just not carrying well and missed 3-4 single pin spares). But, I must have done something right because I had 3 200 games. Our team lost all 4 games but we are still in first place by 8 1/2 points so that is good. Then at the end of the night, I see that I bowled a 666 series. Good thing I am not superstitious. If I had bowled a 665 or 667, maybe the team could have won a game.
The rest of the week was great. Work is going well. And we celebrated Lisa's 24th birthday by having her over for dinner Thursday night. Then next Friday we have the real celebration dinner at Olive Garden for both Lisa and Jeremy.
My odd fact is that I have been to Pub II twice in a week. Lunch last Saturday with Julie and then last night, Thresa and I met Reinhart's there for dinner. And I plan on being there for the start of the NCAA tournament too. Then I'll probably go another 4-6 months without going there. And my diet has started and is going well (other than my stops at Pub II). But that can be a different blog.

Great Weekend
Normally Mondays are a little tough for people since you have to return to work. But this Monday is not too bad for me because of the great weekend we just had. First, Thresa and I got to see all 4 of our kids this weekend. Julie was home for the weekend, Sara and Kel stopped by on Saturday and Sunday, we went shopping out to dinner with Lisa on Sunday and I saw Karen at the CCHS girls basketball game on Saturday night. Thresa got to ride with Karen to my great niece's baby shower. We did not get to see Jeremy but he was watching Illinois beat Iowa so that is OK. Along with all of that, CCHS girls basketball won 2nd in state so that really made for a great weekend.
To me, the weekend was a huge success because we got to see all of our kids and all of them are doing great.
The odd fact today is not really a fact. But it is odd. If you watch the Amazing Race, you will understand. Just think of Flight Time and Big Easy as Kangaroos.

My first blog ever
So many other people have blogs that I figured I would do the same. That way, the whole world will see whatever I choose about my life. And to answer my initial question of "Why does this guy have a blog" - I have no idea. I suspect this will bore you to tears or maybe just scare you with whatever random thoughts fill my brain. Anyway, it is your time to spend.
This week is the first week since returning from our Mexico trip. That vacation was fantastic. The weather and resort were great. The friends we traveled with were great. And it is always a highlight to get to travel with Thresa. We really enjoy going to new places (heck, going anywhere together). We are fortunate to be able to save money to go on trips. By the way, we only spent cash on this trip so no bills from this trip await us.
For work this week, it has been typical. I like my job and feel that I do it well. I even like working from home but I do miss seeing people daily. And I am lucky in that the people I currently work with are very good. In fact, my whole career has been spend working with excellent people.
Not much else to say right now. So I will try to leave with one of the many random thoughts that are working in my head. How amazing is human skin? It repels waters, keeps inside stuff in and outside stuff out. It breaths. It can be cut but then it heals. It keeps you warm and cool. No man-made fabric or fiber can come close to doing any of this stuff. If someone invented a coat or glove even remotely close to human skin, it would change the world.
I told you it was random.
